Redbank Plains State High School’s Link and Launch program, in collaboration with Cleanaway and their Community Grant program, has been immensely valuable in empowering disadvantaged high school seniors to gain their driver's licences upon graduation.

The Queensland Department of Education’s Link and Launch program support young people prior to graduation and those that have completed Year 12 but are not in education, employment or training to navigate their options and choose a pathway that will equip them to successfully transition to study, training or work.

Previous RPSHS graduating cohorts faced significant challenges when transitioning into work, education, or training due to the lack of a driver's licence. Barriers such as financial constraints, limited knowledge, inadequate family support, and the absence of a family car for practice hours were identified as key impediments. Astonishingly, a considerable number of Year 13 students from the classes of 2019 and 2020 didn't even possess a learner's permit.

On April 20, 2023, a generous donation of $4,618 from Cleanaway was gratefully accepted by Ms. Rachael Scott, President of the Redbank Plains State High School Parents and Citizens Association (P&C). This donation aimed to provide crucial support to senior students in their pursuit of obtaining Learner's and Provisional licenses, as well as access to driving assessments and free driving lessons through the PCYC program "Braking the Cycle."

Since April 2023, the invaluable funding from Cleanaway has led to remarkable progress:

45 students gaining access to Prep L
21 students successfully obtaining their Learner's Licenses
20 students passing driving assessments, thereby gaining access to the comprehensive driving lessons provided by Braking the Cycle
7 students excelling in their driving tests and securing their Provisional driving licences
The profound impact of Cleanaway's contribution is evident in the support extended to 117 students grappling with the barrier of obtaining a learner's licence and Provisional licence. This initiative has not only lifted financial burdens but has also empowered these students to embark on a journey towards independence and self-sufficiency.

Thanks to the collaboration with Braking the Cycle, Redbank Plains State High School’s Link and Launch Manager, Roz Bowd has facilitated over 120 driving lessons, fostering critical life skills and confidence among the senior students.

The success of this initiative serves as a beacon of hope, illuminating a path for disadvantaged high school seniors to break free from the shackles of limited mobility and access greater opportunities. Link and Launch Redbank Plains, along with Cleanaway, are committed to continuing this impactful endeavour and look forward to a brighter future for all students.

Link and Launch Manager, Roz Bowd confirmed, “Through the power of determination and collaboration, we've ignited a transformative journey at Redbank Plains State High School. The Link and Launch program, bolstered by the invaluable support from Cleanaway, has shattered barriers and paved the way for newfound independence for our young people. Witnessing 45 students embark on the path to Prep L, 21 secure their Learner's Licenses, and 7 earn their Provisional licenses, I'm reminded that every milestone represents a life changed. This initiative isn't just about driving; it's about opening doors, fostering confidence, and empowering futures. The impact of Cleanaway's contribution resonates deeply as we stand by 117 students in their pursuit of mobility and self-sufficiency. The road ahead is bright, illuminated by the headlights of opportunity. Together with Braking the Cycle, Redbank Plains State High School is driving change, one lesson, one license at a time. Our commitment remains unwavering, and we're excited to steer more students toward a future filled with promise and potential."
