E-scooter safety

E-scooter safety is of utmost importance, especially when it comes to children aged 12–15 years. To ensure their safety and the safety of others using Personal Mobility Devices (PMDs), adult supervision is required for this age group.

Keep in mind that PMDs are intended for riders who are 16 years and above. While children between 12–15 years can ride a PMD, they must do so under the watchful eye of an adult. Children under 12 are not allowed to use PMDs under any circumstances.

It's worth noting that certain scooters fall under the category of Wheeled Recreational Devices and are permitted for use within this age range.

Remember, PMDs are designed for solo use only. Carrying passengers, including children, is strictly prohibited by law. Therefore, parents cannot ride with their child on the same device.

Safety gear is a must! Always wear a helmet while riding a PMD and ensure it is properly fastened to provide maximum protection. Failure to comply with this may result in fines.

Respect the speed limits to avoid accidents. The maximum speed allowed is 25 km/h, but it should only be reached when it is safe to do so. On footpaths, the speed limit is reduced to 12 km/h since November 2022.

Lastly, share the path responsibly and prioritise pedestrian safety by always giving way to them.

For a comprehensive understanding of all the rules, refer to the official website at https://streetsmarts.initiatives.qld.gov.au
