Empowering Students to Speak Up: The Stymie Program at Redbank Plains State High School

At Redbank Plains State High School, we understand the pressures our students face—whether it's standing up against bullying, dealing with mental health concerns, or supporting friends in crisis. That's why we're excited to promote the Stymie program, an essential tool in fostering a safe, supportive environment where students can make a difference.

What is Stymie?

Stymie is an anonymous online platform that empowers students to report concerns such as bullying, cyberbullying, depression, anxiety, illegal activities, and more. It's a proactive solution designed to help students say something when they see or experience harm, all without the fear of being identified. Each year Stymie delivers more than 105,000 notifications to schools all over Australia.

Why Stymie Matters

The bystander effect often discourages individuals from intervening in emergencies, especially when others are present. This can be particularly challenging for young people, who might feel unsure about how to address serious issues involving their peers. Stymie breaks down these barriers by offering a safe space for students to voice their concerns, enabling early intervention and potentially life-changing conversations.

Benefits of Stymie

  • Fostering a Safe Environment: By encouraging students to report concerns, we can address issues like cyberbullying, self-harm, and mental health struggles before they escalate.
  • Stymie Notifications are delivered in less than one second to staff members here at the school. We are committed to responding in confidence, so that the student(s) who need help are supported.
  • Enabling Early Intervention: The anonymous nature of Stymie ensures that students feel comfortable coming forward, allowing school staff and allied health agencies to step in early.
  • Alleviating Anxiety and Stress: Students often carry the weight of their friends' struggles. Stymie offers a way to relieve this burden by providing a direct line to help.
  • Encouraging Pro-Social Behaviour: By empowering students to act, Stymie promotes a culture of care and empathy within our school community.

Stymie is more than just a reporting tool; it's a lifeline that can guide our students in the right direction when they need it most. At Redbank Plains State High School, we believe that every student has the power to be a positive force in their community, and with Stymie, they have the support they need to do just that.
