Being at school every day counts.
If your child is absent one day per week, this quickly adds up to two months of missed school in a year.
Every day counts is an initiative aiming to improve attendance at school. The initiative promotes four key messages:
all children should be enrolled at school and attend on every school day
schools should monitor, communicate and implement strategies to improve regular school attendance
truanting can place a student in unsafe situations and impact on their future employability and life choices
attendance at school is the responsibility of everyone in the community.

School attendance matters
A secondary education is a critical stage in a child's educational journey as it lays the foundation for their future academic and professional endeavours. Here are some reasons why it is important to recognise the importance of regular attendance and a successful secondary education:
- Prepares students for TAFE, university or vocational training: Most tertiary organisations and vocational training programs require a Queensland Certificate of Education (QCE). A successful secondary education provides students with the necessary skills, knowledge, and credentials to pursue a tertiary education or vocational training.
- Opens up more career opportunities: A Queensland Certificate of Education (QCE) is often a minimum requirement for many entry-level jobs. Without a successful secondary education, students may be limited in their career choices and earning potential.
- Develops important life skills: Secondary education is not just about academic learning; it also helps students develop essential life skills such as critical thinking, problem-solving, communication, and collaboration, which are crucial for success in any career.
- Provides a structured environment for learning: Secondary education provides a structured and supportive environment for students to learn and grow. Teachers and mentors can guide students in their academic and personal development, helping them to achieve their goals and potential.
- Fosters social and emotional growth: Secondary education provides opportunities for students to develop social and emotional skills such as empathy, self-awareness, and resilience. These skills are essential for building healthy relationships and navigating the challenges of life.
