On Thursday 1 and Friday 2 August over 30 Redbank Plains State High students in SEP competed in the annual Willowbank Pedal Prix race.

The three teams of juniors in Years 7-9 were first on, with one of those teams entered in the junior open category - the most difficult category.

Each team's starting positions are earned by a drag race down the track for a sprint time. Patrick smashed every other bike’s time, securing position 1 on the grid for the start of the junior race.

The juniors raced for 4 hours on Thursday with plenty of thrills - one student requiring some time with onsite paramedics after rolling the bike, but was soon cleared of injury thanks to the safety protection on our bikes. This student was super eager to get back on the bike and continue racing, showing his determination and resilience. Josh was the pit boss for the day and worked extremely well managing all three junior teams and bikes in the pit lane.

The juniors finished with 1st and 2nd place in the SEP category and the open category team completed 181 laps to finish in 9th position overall.

Seniors in Years 10-12 took to the track Friday for a difficult 8 hours of racing around the 1km track. Amber started the Redbank Spin Doctors team with a solid start. Racing with a team of riders provides time for the students to rest, rehydrate, eat and socialise with other schools. It was pleasing to see our students confidently communicating with students from other schools. With 45 minutes of racing to go, unfortunately the Spin Doctor’s bike steering snapped and was unable to be repaired. Luckily the SEP students had worked very hard to gain a 15+ lap lead, and still managed to hold onto 1st position in spite of this mishap.

The SEP bikes have been upgraded and improved for racing with the help of sponsors and assistance from Mrs Vicky Allen who works tirelessly with staff to ensure all students have the opportunity to participate. Thank you to all the students who raced and helped in the pits. A big thanks to the teachers who have spent time after school training the students. Thank you also to the parents who came and supported our teams. It was a great day full of excitement and fun. Our students were a credit to their families and to the school.
